Health

At the forefront of improving healthcare services and the fight against cancer, Dr. Alfred Mutua initiated cancer awareness campaigns across all the sub-counties in Machakos County, which resulted to over 3,000 residents tested. Through the health center rehabilitations program all health centers are equipped, staffed and stocked with drugs and now residents can be screened for cancer for free.

Machakos became the first County government to open a cancer center. The Machakos Cancer Center and research facility is fully operational and providing free treatment to registered patients under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC). His emphasis on health has transformed Machakos County to be the premier health county in Kenya.

Infrastructure

In his tenure as Machakos County Governor, he facilitated the improvement of infrastructure by construction of roads and affordable housing. Machakos County now boasts over 200km of new tarmac roads, over 8,000 kilometers of graded roads that have greatly increased access across the county and the affordable housing in Mavoko.

This was achieved through lobbying the international development partners, collaborations with the National Government and County Government initiatives.

Business & Foreign Aid

Dr. Alfred Mutua’s leadership transformed Machakos county into a solid investment hub.  Investors and foreign aid donars, both local and international, gained confidence in Machakos County and as a result, land value in Machakos County has appreciated exponentially.

He has also steered the establishment of strong structures and transformative policies that have continually uplifted the livelihood of the residents of Machakos County.

Agriculture & Food Security

Interventions in the agricultural sector have enabled the residents of Machakos County move from being dependent on government food relief food to being self-sufficient and trading their surplus produce with neighboring counties of Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado.

The high agricultural yields have been catalyzed by county government interventions such as subsidized fertilizers to the farmers, free hybrid seedlings and provision of extension services from agricultural officers resulting in value addition to farmers.

Water

Between 2013 to 2022 Dr. Alfred Mutua facilitated the construction of over 440 solar powered boreholes dug and equipped, 240 dams and pans and 216 weirs across all sub-counties in Machakos County.

However, the water problem is far from over, but great strides have been made to ensure that residents of Machakos County no longer walk long distances in search of water. 

Education & Youth Empowerment

A leader keen on empowering the lives of the youth through education, Dr. Alfred Mutua initiated scholarships for the youth in Machakos County wishing to pursue courses at Degree, Diploma and Certificate levels. He collaborated with international universities to offer youth in the county quality education at subsidized costs.

To equip the youth with employable skills, in 2016, Dr. Alfred Mutua initiated a FREE vocational training program where Machakos County youth can study for free in all Government vocational colleges within the county.  As a result, there is an increase in skilled plumbers, dress makers, mechanics, masons from Machakos County.

Sports & Recreation

A sports & recreation enthusiast, Dr. Mutua has positioned Machakos County as a premier sports tourism hub. The iconic Machakos Stadium, that from 2014-2017 remained the only FIFA accredited stadium built by a county government, has hosted international matches ranging from CECAFA, World Cup Women’s qualifiers and Rugby tournaments. Dr. Alfred Mutua has also initiated the construction of 8 stadiums across the sub counties, complete with staffed sports academies that will go a long way in nurturing the sporting talent of the youth in every sub-county. 

Dr. Alfred Mutua also initiated the construction of The Machakos People’s Park which was built in his first term and has won awards as the best public park in Kenya known for events such as the annual Tour De Machakos and the popular film festival Machakosfest.
